Ranch Hunting

1. Our ranch is close to regional airports and easily accessible plus it is situated in exceptionally scenic hunting country
Why hunt in South Texas, which is hard to get to, and where the gifts of Mother Nature certainly have not created the exceptional beauty that you see in the Hill Country. In addition after the hunt here there are great restaurants and shopping in nearby Fredericksburg ‘The Gem of the Hill Country’. Also one should not forget that for barbecue lovers (and what hunter isn’t?), Cooper’s Barbecue is only 25 miles from the Comanche Rock Ranch. Texas Monthly has rated this ‘meat eaters gourmet landmark’ the best Texas barbecue restaurant. How better to celebrate a successful hunt than by ordering a pound of brisket and a dozen ribs washed down by a cold Lone Star beer.

2. It certainly adds enjoyment to a great hunt to have deluxe accommodations
The Hunting Lodge is a converted, remodeled old barn. It is has great character and a 'Texas ranch' atmosphere. It sleeps 16+ in five bedrooms, has two kitchens, a pool and poker table, swimming pool, dart board, and washer pits, granite topped picnic tables, a great barbeque pit plus a family fire pit for marshmallows, songs, and stories. Our Lodge is located in a Live Oak grove above a stream in a relaxing scenic location.
The ranch’s hunting and guest facilities include food plots, walk in cooler, eleven deer blinds and corn feeders, and four fishing lakes. In addition there are six, 2000 pound on demand protein game feeders.

4. Our unique Game Management Program will directly improve your hunting experience
The ranch has 400 acres under high fence. The wildlife herd is strictly and creatively managed under our Game Management Program. Your first response may be that this is a small ranch and thus will have limited hunting potential but upon closer examination you will see this is not the case for several reasons not the least of which is how we handle our Game Management Program.
First --- We have achieved, a very unusual buck to doe sex ratio of 1 buck to 1 doe. We have 180 healthy Whitetail deer resulting in 90 bucks and 90 does. If we use accepted buck/doe ratios that exist in Texas low fence ranches (say 1 buck to 4 does) and the deer density seen in low fenced non-supplemental feed adjacent areas of the state of 1 deer to 10 acres, which is about the necessary acreage to produce one healthy deer. Using these established buck/doe ratios and the number of acres necessary to produce one healthy buck you come to a surprising conclusion. You find that to produce 90 healthy bucks it would take 10 acres to produce one healthy deer X 5 deer to get one buck and thus if we multiply it out we see that to get 90 healthy bucks it will take up to 4,500 acres. This surprising but true fact that to produce the number of healthy buck shooting opportunities that we have on Comanche Rock Ranch you would need 4500 acres.
Second --- Well we have the bucks but you still have questions about how great the hunting is. As you may know, supplemental fed wild animals with ready access to food plots become unusually wary and wild as the relief from hunger let’s them revert to their natural state of alertness. This well nourished animal is by nature elusive which markedly increases the excitement of the chase while at the same time our game density allows the discriminating hunter to see more exceptional animals in their daily hunt.
Third --- The ranch is located in rugged, tree and brush covered, beautiful rolling rugged terrain that seems much larger than it is. The animal density and buck/doe ratio more than compensates for the ranch size and establishes an atmosphere of abundant wild and certainly elusive game. The topography is such that you simply have to use a helicopter survey (we do this yearly) to see the actual abundance of elusive game animals that are available for a skilled hunter.

5. How does a combination of high and low fence hunting opportunities enhance your hunting experience
Whitetail and Axis Deer plus Blackbuck Antelope, Aoudad Sheep, and Rio Grande Turkey abound in the high fenced area. In addition the ranch has some of the best low fenced hunting in the state as the result of the fact that a long narrow strip of very scenic woodlands runs along Sandy creek and lies adjacent to the southern border of Enchanted Rock State Natural Area. The park contains 1600 acres and is only hunted two weekends a year. We supplemental feed our low fenced acreage throughout the year to encourage game migration from the park. Thus Whitetail Deer and free ranging Exotics cross into our ranch from the park and this low fence area adds markedly to the potential ranch game harvest opportunities. Gillespie County has a five deer limit thus allowing our hunters a good chance to fill their freezer. Also since there is reduce hunting pressure in the park many of these animals are older and better bucks than you might expect to see.

6. The presence of a few great exotics can add interest to your hunting experience
Our Whitetail deer management program has made great progress and we are also proud of the success we have had at balancing our deer program with Management Programs for small breeding herds of Axis Deer, Blackbuck Antelope, and Aoudad Sheep. The additions of these three exotic species, which are free ranging in our part of Texas, enrich the visual excitement for both the hunter and the naturalist. In Texas these exotics can be hunted throughout the year and thus for an avid hunter it greatly extends his or her hunting season. It also helps to diversify the hunter’s shooting opportunities and the photographer’s film use. We also have Rio Grande Turkey, doves, quail, and a large variety of ‘varmints’, lizards, butterflies and songbirds and waterfowl. The fact that there are no cattle on the ranch allows our natural habitat and the general visual appearance of our ranch to more closely resemble Texas as it was at the turn of the century.

7. Our Managed Land Deer Permit in the high fence area offers you a longer hunting season
The Comanche Rock Ranch has both high and low fenced hunting. We operate the high fenced area under a Texas Park & Wildlife Managed Land Deer Permit. This provides the hunter with both an extended hunting season (this year from September 29th to February 28th) and a much larger harvest limit. This is certainly a marked improvement for clients with a tight business schedule. In the low fenced area we are governed by Texas Parks & Wildlife harvest regulations and we are luckily in a five deer County, which certainly helps a hunter with hungry kids to feed.

8. You can select the individual services you need to make your hunt a more pleasurable experience
If you desire, we can help you organize your hunting trip so that all-inclusive services that you may desire can be provided. Total inclusive service is available such as airport pick-up service, arranging your Texas hunting licenses, cooks, guides, cleaning, shopping, baby sitting, handling your trophy and processing your meat, etc. are available.
